LinkedIn has pushed a simple yet powerful idea: if a professional profile displays a verified identity badge, the market can trust it a bit more. At a platform scale, this "signal" is valuable: it reduces fraud, lowers business friction, improves the user experience, and protects the core business.
The issue arises when verification stops being a visual gesture and transforms into an operational chain involving third parties, sensitive data flows, and queries the user cannot see. A Forbes article highlighted the technology partner LinkedIn uses to verify identities outside the United States, Canada, Mexico, and India: Persona. According to the report, a security researcher analyzed terms and notes from the process after verifying their identity with a passport, concluding that the system could involve extensive cross-checking with multiple sources and subprocessors, raising concerns about privacy and oversight.
From Persona's perspective, its CEO, Rick Song, refuted claims that data is processed for purposes other than identity confirmation. He stated that it is not used for AI training and outlined data deletion policies, including immediate deletion of biometric data and the removal of other data within 30 days, based on the context from the reports.
So far, the debate appears privacy-focused. In practice, it’s a more uncomfortable topic for C-level executives: it’s organizational design and portfolio governance. LinkedIn has taken on a critical function for its business (trust in identities) and executes it through a geography-based multiprovider model. This approach can be excellent for scaling quickly but requires an internal discipline that many firms underestimate: controlling third-party risks with the same rigor as one controls their own product.

From a portfolio perspective, this is a classic conflict between the current revenue engine (protecting the fraud network) and an expansion that touches sensitive fibers (global digital identity). As the company grows, the impulse for efficiency drives outsourcing. Trust, however, cannot be outsourced without cost: the operation is outsourced, but the reputational responsibility stays in-house.
Outsourcing Identity Demands a Control System, Not Just a Contract
The value of a badge depends on its credibility. For it to be credible, it must be hard to forge and easy to understand. The first pushes for deeper verifications; the second demands transparency and clear limits. The conflict arises when the organization becomes obsessed with the outcome (fewer bots, less fraud) but fails to invest adequately in the provider's control system.

The typical mistake is to measure such initiatives solely with growth indicators (verifications, activations, reduction of fake accounts) while sidelining the indicator that holds everything together: perceived legitimacy. This stance is anti-bureaucratic in the right sense: fewer committees, more explicit responsibility, and greater traceability.
Simultaneously, the program must treat verification as controlled exploratory investment, even though it is already in production. The scale of 100 million suggests maturity, but public and regulatory sensitivity indicates the learning is not yet over. In such initiatives, learning is measured in reduction of reputational incidents, regional consistency, and audit testing capability, not just in adoption.
