The Real Cost of Designing from a Single Perspective

What didn’t survive was the decision to transform it into a mass-market social network without the anticipation and governance mechanisms that that context requires.

Each documented breaking point—the face scanner, the management of the Disney agreement, the revenue versus computing equation, the drop in retention—has a reading in terms of which perspectives were absent when the decisions that produced them were made. I am not asserting that a more diverse team would have guaranteed Sora's success. I am pointing out that the absence of diversity of perspective in AI design teams has measurable costs: legal costs, reputational costs, user retention costs, and opportunity costs in deals that unravel before generating a penny.

The executive teams that will make decisions about robotics, simulation, and the next major moves of OpenAI inherit the same decision-making process that produced Sora. The question is not whether the technology is good enough. OpenAI's technology is, by any measure, impressive. The operational question is whether the people in the room when these systems are designed can see broadly enough the contexts in which those systems will live.

Next time the board of any tech company sits down to evaluate the launch of a product with mass reach, the composition of that table is not a decorative demographic detail. It’s a risk variable with a direct impact on cash flow. Teams where all members share the same backgrounds, networks, and cultural references are not more cohesive or efficient: they are more fragile because their blind spots are collective and no one in the room can point them out.
